VTCI announces fiber optic construction plan for San Perlita, Lasara & Tilden exchanges

Valley Telephone Cooperative, Inc. has begun to replace copper with fiber optic cable in San Perlita, Lasara and Tilden to provide the highest quality performance in telecommunication services at affordable prices, including: telephone, Internet and television entertainment with VTX Vision™.

“We look forward to upgrading all of the existing VTCI communities to Fiber-To-The-Home, and this is the first phase for fiber optic construction,” said General Manager Dave Osborn. “This upgrade will allow us to continue providing the best quality in telecommunication services.”

For years Valley Telephone has utilized fiber optic technology within its internal network and now, fiber optic cables will be used all the way to the home or business. Customers in these rural South Texas communities are able to receive the same level or in most cases, better quality service than residents in urban areas.

Faster speeds will be available to Internet users and a better quality reception will be installed with the new television entertainment service, VTX Vision™. Furthermore, this future proof technology increases the value of residential and commercial areas.

The copper lines currently being used have broadband limitations and are more than 30 years old; this is why the Cooperative decided to begin a fiber optic construction upgrade for some of the oldest exchanges. An exchange area refers to a geographic area in which telephone service and prices are the same.

“This fiber optic upgrade can best be compared to a road upgrade,” said Richard Cavin, Network Manager. “Every few years we have to repave the streets due to the weather conditionsor expand the street lanes due to heavy traffic. A similar thing happens with our telecommunications network.”

“Valley Telephone was the first company to deploy Fiber-To-The-Home south of San Antonio,” Cavin explained. “The first construction was done on August 2005 and since then, we have already launched in three additional areas.”
